The 2011 Grattan Report on improving teacher performance highlighted the importance of focused observations of lessons and quality feedback to teachers.  This two-day workshop will assist leaders in building observation and feedback skills as a strategy for ensuring consistent teaching and learning standards across your school.  Key documents such as the AITSL’s National Professional Standards for Teachers and the Hay Group’s Growing our Potential will be used as the basis for informing judgments and school-based processes.

Who is it suitable for?

Experienced and new Principals; Deputy, Associate and Assistant Principals; Heads of Learning Areas/Coordinators and Leading Teachers.

Outcomes

By the end of the program participants will have extended knowledge, skills and confidence in:

  • establishing a culture of continuous improvement that is based on collaborative practices
  • using the National Professional Standards for Teachers as the basis for informing classroom practice
  • using multiple sources of evidence including student feedback to inform teachers’ practice
  • observing lessons in a supportive, yet challenging environment
  • giving productive and developmental feedback to teachers that is matched with appropriate support
  • more rigorous evaluation of students’ progress through work scrutiny, discussion and performance data.

Program

This course will cover:

  • using the National Professional Standards for Teachers
  • observing lessons and recording information
  • strategies to support all teachers to continuously improve
  • recognising good/outstanding lessons
  • opportunity to practise and refine specific skills in giving feedback
  • analysing multiple sources of evidence to inform judgments about the quality of learning outcomes.

Participants are asked to bring 10-12 pieces of marked student work from across the school.

Improving Classroom Observation

This essential one-day workshop provides an opportunity for teaching staff and coaches to review the characteristics of effective teaching and learning against the national Professional Standards for Teachers.  During the workshop participants will explore how the Standards can support self-evaluation to inform personal and whole-school development plans.  Participants will also build their skills and confidence in giving and receiving feedback within collegial teams, in order to support continuous improvement in the quality of teaching and learning.

Who is it suitable for?

This program is aimed at all teaching and support staff.

Outcomes

This one day program develops and enhances lesson evaluation skills and observation techniques. It also supports greater consistency in your evaluations of the quality of learning and teaching across your whole school.

Program

The program will give guidance on how to carry out lesson observations. It will cover:

  • how to recognise the quality of lessons by referring to the most up-to-date National Professional Standards for Teachers for evaluating learning and teaching
  • what to record and how to record it
  • providing useful feedback to colleagues
  • how to appreciate the benefits of observing, and being observed by colleagues; and
  • how to undertake supportive and collaborative classroom observations which contribute to a professional culture of self-evaluation.
